"I wanted to make sure that first and foremost Caesar IV was an immersive world that you could really dive into, and so we added as much detail to the environment and buildings as current technology constraints would allow. As usual the real challenge then came in the form of making all of the components work together visually. All of the elements were considered in the context of the game to ensure color and styling treatments worked together, much in the same way an artist would approach a painting. As far as style, ultimately we were striving for an artist's interpretation of Rome and Roman civilization. We wanted to honor as much historical Roman architecture as possible, without becoming slave to it and producing a visually stale historical simulation." -Mike Malone - Senior Artist and 3d Art Lead |

"I wanted to render the building buttons and other UI elements in a style that would be particular to the Roman culture. I chose the "cameo" as this is a fine decorative art form that if done properly, looks very classical. So, using authentic Roman cameos as reference, I painted the building buttons in that style." -Adam Carriuolo, Senior Artist and User Interface Art Lead |

"I used some historic architectural components as a reference for the majority of the building models, but due to the limitation of the polygon counts, I always have to give up certain details that I would like to be on the buildings. So I had to twist things around in order to give the buildings an interesting look and yet stay within the polygon count budget." -Kwan Sukasame - Artist |

"When designing the characters in the game I tried to imagine what it was like living in ancient Rome, where life was very hard for some while others lived in luxury. I then modeled the appearance and mannerisms of each character according to his class. For example, a poor man would be humble, undernourished, and tired, and his clothes would be dirty and worn. A rich man would be arrogant, well rested, with clean and stylish clothing. I keep these images in mind when I create all the different characters and animations so each will all have a unique look and personality, and their role in the game will be clearly communicated to the player." -Dennis Rose - Senior Artist |
